Abstract
Incorporating Business Process Semantics and Provenance into Information Life Cycle Management
Sudha Ram, Ph.D.
ILM is comprised of policies, processes, practices, and tools used to align the business value of information with the most appropriate and cost effective Information Technology (IT) infrastructure from the time information is conceived through its final disposition. Today, there are many vendors offering their solutions for ILM. These can be classified into several categories including hierarchical storage management, archiving solutions, date replication services, compliance monitoring, and document management. However, most of these vendors have addressed only a few bits and pieces of the ILM vision. We believe it is important to develop an unbiased and objective way to derive the value of corporate information or data. Such a valuation scheme, if developed properly and validated, can be used to drive information or data classification and also used to align the IT infrastructure with various information classes. The value can also be used to set optimal policies for migration, retention and replication of various types of corporate information. Most importantly, it can be used to provide an automated (or at the very least a semi-automated) end-to-end ILM solution. This talk will focus on developing a valuation mechanism that incorporates business process semantics and provenance of information.
